Our Recommended Itineraries – A Day With Your Children

After pancakes and French Toast for breakfast in the Bistro, put on your best walking shoes and take a stroll down picturesque Charles Street, cross over on the footbridge to the Esplanade and continue east until you see the dome of the Museum of Science. After visiting the museum (don’t miss the planetarium and IMAX theater), jump onto one of the amphibious Ducktours for a tour of Boston your children (and you) will never forget.

After a late lunch in the North End with a cannoli for dessert, stroll over to the aquarium for a visit to one of the largest indoor fish tanks in the country. Take the ferry boat (part of Boston’s public transportation system) to Charlestown for a visit to the USS Constitution and its museum which boasts a large exhibit for children. The view of Boston from the water is spectacular.

If you would prefer to stay in the neighborhood, take a deliciously serene ride on the Swan Boats in the Public Garden or see a “Free Friday Night Flick” at the Hatch Shell on the Esplanade at sundown during the summer months. The Frog Pond offers wading in the summer and skating in the winter. There is also a playground adjacent to the wading pool. The Boston Common contains tennis courts, baseball diamonds, as well as large grassy fields and hills to roll down. All of these neighborhood destinations are within a five minute walk from the Beacon Hill Hotel & Bistro.

The recently expanded Boston Children’s Museum in South Boston is always a popular destination for the younger set. Older children would probably enjoy walking the Freedom Trail, especially the ghostly graveyards, taking a tour of the State House, and strolling around Faneuil Hall.

And if all this were not enough to fill your time in Boston (or to consider adding an extra day or two), a whale watching expedition should also be on your list. The New England Aquarium organizes an excellent one.

Remember that Boston is the home of champions – be they the Red Sox, the Patriots, the Celtics or the Bruins. A tour of Fenway Park will undoubtedly be a highlight for all children, from seven to seventy years old. Game tickets for all four teams are hard to come by, so please plan ahead!
